About Equality and Diversity
Equality
Equality is about giving people who have different identities based on their race, gender, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion and faith; the same chance to take part in work, education, housing, health and other services.
In England the laws concerning equality are laid down in the following acts of Parliament:
- Race Relations Act 1976
- Sex Discrimination Act 1975
- Disability Discrimination Act 2005
- Employment Equality (Age) Regulation 2006
- Employment Equality (Sexual orientation) Regulation 2003
- Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulation 2003
Diversity
Diversity is about recognising individual differences, which can include social class, cultural differences, marital status, skills and how these differences and others can benefit our organisation.
Our commitment to promoting equality and diversity
St Georges Community Housing is commited to promoting equality and diversity in the policies we make, the services we provide and the workforce we employ.
Our Equality and Diversity Co-ordinator is responsible for making sure that all our customers have equal access to our complete range of services.
Our contractors, partners and staff are required to promote and ensure that customers are treated equally when carrying out their work.

Since commencing business on 2nd April 2007, St Georges has demonstrated its commitment to equality and diversity.
We recognise that our workforce should be as diverse as the communities we serve and we believe in equality and fairness for all our customers.
We will not discriminate against any group or individual.
We will achieve this by:
- making sure that the way we deliver our services and make our policies is helpful to our customers. We do this through a process called ‘Equality Impact Assessment’
- developing our Equality and Diversity Action Plan to look at any areas needing improvement. The Equality and Diversity Action Plan sets out how we plan to meet our customers needs
- having an equality scheme that shows we meet our legal responsibilities.
We work in partnership with Basildon Council's Domestic Violence Strategy and all our staff are trained to assist any victims of domestic violence. Our Anti-social Behaviour team deals with domestic violence.
