Become a member of the SGCH Ltd Board of Directors


St Georges Community Housing Limited is managed by a board of directors, whose duty is to ensure the Company is run effectively and efficiently.

The Board numbers a total of 15 members, of which;
  • 5 are Basildon District resident members (4 Basildon Council tenants and 1 Basildon Council leaseholder)
  • 5 are independent members, selected for a particular expertise they will supply as a member of the Board
  • 5 are Basildon Council nominated members (drawn from amongst local elected ward councillors).
We are recruiting now - Deadline for applications to be received by us is 12pm, 25th June 2010

Due to the annual retirement of four Board Members in October 2010, we are currently recruiting
  • two Resident Board Members and
  • two Independent Board Members
Closing dates

Expressions of interest in becoming a Board Member should be received by us before 9.00am on Tuesday, 1 June 2010.

All application forms will need to be returned to us no later than midday on 25 June 2010.

Person requirements

We welcome applicants from all sectors of the community we serve, however, we particularly encourage younger people, women, people with disabilities and members of the BME community to apply. We have a strong commitment to service excellence and continuous improvement in all areas of our work.
  • Independent Board Member - An Independent Board Member cannot be a tenant or leaseholder of Basildon District Council, and will need relevant business or similar experience. You do not need to live or work within the district, however, a knowledge of social housing issues would be an advantage.
  • Tenant Board Member - To be a Tenant Board Member you will need to be a Basildon Council tenant who has a keen interest in social housing and who wants to be more involved at a strategic level.

Reimbursement and training

This is an opportunity to learn new skills and to make a real difference to both the Company and the local community.

Board Members serve a three year term and although these positions are unpaid, all reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

Full training will be given to all successful applicants.


What being a Board Member will involve

Being a member of the St Georges Board of Directors will present you with the opportunity to have a direct involvement in the way we deliver services and change people's lives for the better.

All Board members share responsiblity for the management board decisions.

Each board member should only act in the interests of St Georges Community Housing and not on behalf of any one area or group of tenants, leaseholders or others.

Here is a list of things board members can be involved in. We know that not everyone has skills and experience in all these areas but with 15 board members we can cover all areas:-

  • Act in the capacity of a director under the Companies Act
  • Participate in setting, implementing and monitoring St Georges Community Housing aims and values
  • Ensure that decisions taken by the board are in the best interests of St Georges Community Housing and that it's legal and moral responsibilities are met
  • Approve budgets and challenge financial information about St Georges Community Housing business to make sure that resources are being used wisely
  • Monitor St Georges Community Housing performance
  • Evaluate potential risks and make sure St Georges Community Housing has measures in place to manage the risks in the most effective way
  • Work as part of a team at all times

Elections to the Board of Directors

Elections are be held in rotation over a three-year period and vacant positions on the Board will be advertised in the press where Independent and Tenant/Leaseholder are required.
