The Community Wardens

St Georges Community Housing, in partnership with Basildon District Council, operates a Community Warden scheme throughout the Basildon District.

St Georges Community Housing and Basildon District Council are committed to making our
communities safer and the Community Wardens play a crucial part in fulfilling this.
The RESPECT Standard - tackling anti-social behaviour and its causes - This link opens in a new window.

Our Community Wardens are fully trained and accredited with the national Community Safety Scheme.

They provide a uniformed presence on housing estates across the District to whom residents can report their concerns.

Community Wardens will either deal with a problem directly or refer the matter to whichever agency is responsible for taking the appropriate action to resolve the problem.

We have a senior Community Warden and five Community Wardens to cover the whole Basildon District.

Each Warden is responsible for a designated area, allowing them to form strong links with local communities and the agencies working in that area.

We prioritise our patrols in “hot spots” within the designated areas where specific problems of anti-social behaviour are known to occur.

The Community Wardens provide a point of contact for residents and seek to ensure that concerns, questions and complaints are dealt with as quickly as possible.

The Community Wardens have also taken the lead on a number of projects aimed at creating diversionary activities and preventing young people getting involved in anti-social behaviour.

These include Mission Catwalk and our Junior Warden Scheme.

Community Wardens:
  • aim to reduce fear of crime and anti-social behaviour by providing re-assurance to local people.
  • act as a recognised point of contact to help people feel safe and provide a link between residents and service providers
  • deter incidents of anti-social behaviour
  • report environmental problems such as graffiti/abandoned vehicles /littering/dumping
  • remove small areas of graffiti wherever possible, for example on road signs and other street furniture.
  • attend community events
  • work with groups of young people offering advice on diversionary activities
  • visit vulnerable residents and victims of anti-social behaviour to offer support
  • work with schools to encourage young people to be good citizens by raising awareness of environmental issues such as graffiti
